Course Details--Planning your trip
Here are all the details that you need to finalize your plans for your trip to upstate NY.
If I missed anything---please ask!
Nearest airport = ROC (Rochester, NY)
Nearest lodging = Microtel Inn in Victor, NY (The majority of the students stay here.)
Our class day:
10am-6pm. Instructors will be available for extra help until 7pm if needed.
We will provide coffee and a catered lunch at the hotel so we can keep our noses to the grindstone and cram as much content as possible into our day.
After Hours and Extended Vacation Activities:
We recognize that for a busy shop owner, a week away IS your vacation. You may wish to build in an extra day or two to check out the area. There are lots of great things to do in the Fingerlakes area and the city of Rochester, NY and we can help coordinate.
- New York Fingerlakes Wine Trail
- Niagara Falls (90 minutes west)--best view from the Canadian side, pack your passport for border crossing
- Boating/Fishing on Canandaigua Lake
- Letchworth State Park "The Grand Canyon of the East"
- New York City ---6.5 hours by Amtrak train to Penn Station.
What do I need to bring for the course?
We have been hard at work fine-tuning the practical side of our course---the boards we will be working on!
I am working with e-waste companies, corporate sponsors, and individual donors who support our efforts in education. We have gotten a good collection of student boards to reduce the hardship of having to dig up boards to work on. We are feeling the love here with lots of free and low cost board donations from our supporters. If this keeps up we may be able to complete our student board acquisition and not have to charge rental fees.
What we still need: (the only boards that *don't* help are board with no visible damage that don't power on. Any other condition is fine.)
- iPad 4 boards/housings (for backlight and U2 charging chip work)
- Samsung or iPod 4th generation touch (our charge port examples)
- iPad mini (for digitizer fpc, and backlight problem)
- iPhone 5c (for phone connectors and U2 charging chip work)
- iPhone 5s (for BSOD long screw damage problem)
- Any MacBook Pro A1278 board
If you have any of the above that you can bring--fantastic! Let me know :)
You are free to bring one or more "problem boards" that you're hoping to fix. We may pick a few to use as examples for the class. We can't make any promises---not all boards are repairable, and we will all learn to avoid rabbit holes in this course!
Equipment and Supplies:
We will provide all equipment and supplies for the course.
We will have 8 fully functional soldering stations with a full set of soldering supplies that are the same as what we use day to day. Each will have a Hakko FM 202 soldering station with a standard iron. You'll also get to try the FM 2023 hot tweezers and the new FM 2032 micropencil. We will have hot air stations, and professional quality microscopes. We will be able to watch you solder via real-time video projection if you're having trouble, so you can get real-time personal feedback.
We are working with corporate sponsors to put together some soldering packages to make it easy for you to get the equipment and supplies that you need to continue this work back at home. We won't have more details on that until the course begins.
Everything is coming together---we are very excited to bring this personal training to you!
Feel free to send a note with any questions. Use the quick question form to the right.
